"March 28th, 2025, is a date etched in the memory of Myanmar. At 12:50 PM local time, a massive earthquake of magnitude 7.7-7.9 struck the Sagaing Region, its epicenter near Mandalay, our nation's second-largest city. The ground shook with terrifying force, reaching an intensity of X (Extreme) on the Modified Mercalli scale. It was the most powerful earthquake to hit Myanmar in over a century, a devastating strike-slip shock that ripped through the earth.

The impact was widespread and catastrophic. Buildings crumbled, roads buckled, and essential infrastructure like power lines and communication networks were severely damaged, leaving countless communities isolated. Tragically, the earthquake claimed thousands of lives and left many more injured and missing. Mosques collapsed during Friday prayers, monasteries and pagodas, vital parts of our cultural heritage, were reduced to rubble.

The tremors were felt far beyond our borders, reaching neighboring countries like Thailand, where even high-rise buildings in Bangkok swayed alarmingly. Here in Myanmar, the devastation was concentrated in Sagaing and Mandalay, but the effects rippled through Magway, Bago, Shan, and even the capital, Naypyitaw.

In the immediate aftermath, the international community offered assistance. Yet, the complexities of the ongoing situation within our country meant that much of this aid faced significant obstacles in reaching those who desperately needed it. It is a heartbreaking reality that only a small fraction of the promised relief made its way to the victims.

It is in this context of urgent need and limited access that our local philanthropy community was born. We are ordinary people, united by a shared humanity and a deep concern for our neighbors. We have come together to bridge the gaps, to reach those left behind, and to offer unwavering support to all affected by this disaster, regardless of their background.
